Alex IhnenMarch 18, 2013 (St. Louis, MO) — The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Alex Ihnen to the position of Director of Development effective April 2. Ihnen joins CAM after six years at Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as a Regional Director of Development, representing the school's collaborative fundraising efforts in New England, Ohio, and Southwest Florida.

At Washington University, Ihnen concentrated on annual, major, and planned gifts with a focus on solicitations of $50,000 and greater to more than 14,000 alumni and donors. He managed the activities of two Regional Cabinet volunteer boards and proposed, planned, and executed numerous events each year.

Ihnen has been publicly engaged in many conversations related to civic engagement in St. Louis and is the owner and editor of the blog, the preeminent online hub for discussion of issues critical to the City of Saint Louis and the Metro Area. Last year he was recognized for excellence in civic leadership by the New Leaders Council of St. Louis. Ihnen is also a member and past chair of City to River, an organization dedicated to improving connections between the riverfront and downtown St. Louis. “CAM is a dynamic institution that’s integral to the fabric of St. Louis,” said Ihnen. “I’m delighted to join the team there and to have this opportunity to combine my interests in development and civic involvement at the Museum.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Alex to CAM,” said Director Lisa Melandri. “His commitment to this community and ability to communicate the needs of the institution will be a huge benefit to the Museum. We’re now positioned to further our goals of focusing more on major gifts and expanding our reach with audiences who share our passion for art and for this city.”

Born and raised in North Manchester, Indiana, Ihnen attended Indiana University and earned both a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's in public affairs. He has also studied at the University of South Australia in Adelaide and the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy. At Indiana, Ihnen won the Little 500 cycling race made famous by the movie Breaking Away. He and his wife, Katie, moved to St. Louis in 2004. She attends Washington University in St. Louis and is pursuing a joint MD/PhD in neuroscience. They are the proud parents of daughter, Lucy (4), and son, Oscar (2). The family lives in University City.
