It’s nextSTL.com in a podcast! In this episode we speak with regular nextSTL contributor Greg Johnson. We attempt to cover the boom in development news from across St. Louis from the riverfront westward. From CityArchRiver to the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency to the Alverne to Jefferson Arms and on and on, we cover a lot of ground!

With so much happening here, our discussion, recorded a couple weeks ago, is already a bit dated. Visit nextSTL.com to catch up and learn more about how St. Louis is changing. You can find Greg on Twitter @PresbyterianStl.

One out of 6 people in the St. Louis metropolitan area live on the east side. It would be nice to include that part of the region in development news.

Is plan for green street in the grove dead?

    • Alex Ihnen

      No.

Awesome. Is there any news about lacledes landing development? I remember the parking garage proposal, but also residential tower adjacent to it. Will that come with CAR renovations or is it more a vision?

        • Alex Ihnen

Nothing to share. I’d guess there will be a round of investment there, but we’ll see.

        • John R

I believe the parking garage deal with C+A+R is dead; my guess is that is in large part due to Metro relocating its HQ from the Landing to the CBD. Of course, Drury could initiate it’s own project.

At 28:50 a teaser for a story on the 2016 zoo expansion plan was mentioned. I’ve been looking forward to see the full plan since stltoday ran the story in April.

Awesome news. Any idea on how we rank with Kansas City? Census estimates keep showing growth for them, but what part of KC is seeing growth? Wonder if the growth is as urban as Stl’s or if they are seeing more outskirt growth

    • Chicagoan

Isn’t Kansas City about twice as big as St. Louis (land-wise)?

I believe a lot of development in Kansas City is low-density.

      • John R

KC is about 5 times the sq, mi. as STL City, however. it is growing more in population than combined STL City + STL County. (Which isn’t too difficult because together we are essentially zero growth.)

And while much of KC’s growth is low-density, suburban-style, they also are adding a lot in the core like we are… tons of downtown apartments are being added.

        • John R

Taking a closer look, STL County Census estimates show a gain of about 4,500 from 2010 – 2015 but after subtracting the City loss of about 3,500 we’ve gained maybe a 1,000 together. KC is estimated to have gained about 15,000 people during the same period.

    Great podcast Alex!

  • Chicagoan

    Dang I love these podcasts.

    Great stuff, gentleman.

    • Adam

      Me too. And agreed.

    • Alex Ihnen

Thanks. Likely to take a pause at 10 and plan for another 10 starting in a month or more. We’ll see.
