Downtown Beer/Wine Garden

Unread postby jcity » Sun Mar 18, 2007 4:36 pm

Why don't they make use of one of the "parks" in front of the Soldiers Memorial/ Union Pacific with a beer or wine garden? St. Louis used to have these all over the city. The travel channel visited one in Stockholm. Why can't St. Louis do this? How cool would it be to sit outside downtown, staring across the street at City Hall, Civil Courts, Union Pacific, etc.

Charlie Brennan has long advocated turning the river overlook on the Arch grounds, atop the flood wall nearest Eads, into a summertime beer garden.

It's an idea worth considering. Something like the beer garden in the picture above would be a low-cost (and fun) way to liven up the riverfront.

Ok, but what kind of beer would they serve? Without being snooty, they'd have to serve a mix of good and mass-market beer. It's a shame these have to be mutually exclusive...

Dont know how youd react to this, but AB should sponsor building one. They wouldnt just serve their products either becuase they are the exclusive importer of lots of European beers. I think chinese too. We arent just a Bud, Bud Light city and AB isnt just a Bud and Bud light company

I agree. I would love to see a downtown version of the Grant's Farm Bauernhof in Kiener Plaza selling beer in the Kiener Plaza area.

JCity, for a second I just glanced at the photo and thought: Why is there some alien spacecraft hovering over that outdoor restaurant, and who are all those people cowering under their chairs?

Then I realized it was a lantern, and the chairs were just tucked under the tables.

AB has enough of a monopoly. I don't think they should sponsor it at all. They already have the Stadium.

Tom Schlafly should sponsor it.

There's no reason anyone should have to "sponsor" it. So-called City "leadership" needs to approach the National Park Service to aggressively promote the idea, and a franchise agreement needs to be bid out.

The actual process, of course, will be that someone with influence but no accountability will suggest it, and a "blue ribbon" panel will take "public input," and it will be built just in time for the opening of the new bridge.

Heck, something like this could be a good fit for the Landing, bypassing the National Parks Service altogether.

I've often wondered why they don't take an approach like this on a rooftop or site "overlooking" the river for daytime crowds. They would increase the income vs. just the night crowd and there ARE people down there at the archgrounds.
